The Foundation of the Boambee Herd

How a group of females purchased at the Witherswood Angus dispersal helped establish the Boambee stud herd, and continue to influence the program today.

Every breeding program has a starting point

For Boambee Angus, an important part of that foundation came through the opportunity to acquire a significant group of females from the Witherswood Angus dispersal in 2017/2018.

Those females arrived at Boambee at a formative time for the stud program and provided a strong maternal base from which to build. Their influence can still be seen throughout the herd today.

Building from the Female

From the beginning, the female has played an important role in the direction of the Boambee breeding program.

The Witherswood females brought proven maternal genetics into the herd and gave Boambee a foundation upon which to introduce carefully selected sires from leading Angus programs.

Over subsequent generations, those bloodlines have been evaluated, retained and refined with the same fundamental objective. Breeding structurally sound, fertile and functional Angus cattle capable of performing in commercial conditions.

Today, descendants of those original females can be found throughout both the Boambee stud herd and sale progeny.

From Foundation Females - Present

The connection between those early purchases and the cattle being produced today was particularly evident in the female offering at the 2026 Boambee Bull & Female Sale.

Four registered stud heifers were selected for the sale, providing buyers with the opportunity to access females directly from the heart of the Boambee program.

For Boambee, offering stud females is about more than presenting an attractive animal on sale day. Each represents generations of breeding decisions and the maternal families being developed within the herd.

They are also a reflection of how far the program has come since those foundation females first arrived at East Seaham.

Generations in the Making

While the Boambee herd continues to evolve through AI, embryo transfer and the introduction of new genetics, the principles behind the program remain consistent.

Strong females build strong cow families. Strong cow families provide consistency. And consistency, generation after generation, is ultimately what builds a breeding program.

The females purchased from Witherswood helped provide that starting point.

Nearly a decade later, their influence continues.
